The Governors of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join our staff team.  This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the educational journey of our children in a vibrant Preston school. The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting children’s learning and development.

The post is for 27.9 hours per week Monday to Friday: 8.40am to 3.00pm. Although this is advertised as a fixed term position (until end July 2026), we would hope to be able to offer a permanent post at the end of this period.

At St Joseph's, the wellbeing of our families, pupils and staff is at the heart of all we do.  We are looking for individuals with excellent people skills who can nurture and support our children with their learning within the Catholic ethos of our school.

Day-to-day of the role under the supervision of the class teacher:

  • Assist the class teacher in preparing and delivering educational activities.
  • Provide support to individual students and small groups to help them understand and complete tasks.
  • Encourage children’s engagement with the curriculum and foster a positive learning environment.
  • Monitor and record children’s progress, sharing observations with the class teacher.
  • Help manage classroom resources and set up for lessons.
  • Support the class teacher in managing behaviour and maintaining classroom discipline.
  • Participate in school meetings and professional development sessions as required.

    Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience working as a Teaching Assistant or in a similar educational support role.
  • Strong understanding of the educational needs of children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the class teacher and other staff members.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive, encouraging attitude.
  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).

  • Essential Qualifications

    NVQ level 2 or above qualification –appropriate to the post (or equivalent)

    GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) to grade ‘C’ or above

    Essential Experience

    Experience of working with or caring for children of relevant age

    Experience of working in a relevant classroom/service environment

    Experience of supporting pupils with diverse needs
